Eye on Radiation Therapy
While radiation oncologists are adopting volumetric-modulated arc therapy to boost speed, Tomotherapy is employing new techniques to shorten treatment times, while maintaining its sharp accuracy. Plus, growing volumes in image data sets prompt OIMS developers to streamline solutions.

Will Imaging Fall Under the ARRA's "Meaningful Use" Definition

In the session "Economic Stimulus Package Funding Opportunities," doctors and healthcare IT administrators discussed whether PACS would fall under the "meaningful use" definition in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), and whether PACS would subsequently be eligible for economic stimulus funding.
According to the panelists, funding from the NIH Challenge Grants (NIH has designated at least $200 million in FY 2009 and FY 2010 for a new initiative called the NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research) have been awarded to submissions mainly for interoperability solutions, but also for imaging systems. Panelist Eliot Siegel, M.D., encouraged radiology IT to take advantage of funding opportunities through the use of teleradiology and the interoperability of PACS.
SIIM Board Members Bradley J. Erickson, M.D., Ph.D., FSIIM, Katherine P. Andriole, Ph.D., FSIIM, Paul J. Chang, M.D., FSIIM, and David L. Weiss, M.D., gathered to address today's critical issues in radiology. Issues included workflow, safety, improving quality, critical results reporting, and the threat of commoditizing radiology.
