PCI on Growth Trend, Imaging Makes Front Page News
Data presented on ARRIVE, SPIRIT II, COURAGE and CREATE trials were supportive of PCI procedures, marking the silver lining in a cloud of negative press from the mainstream that appeared on the eve of ACC’s 57th Annual Scientific Session, held in Chicago, IL, from March 29 - April 1. The positive outcomes were significant considering the anticipated launch of four new drug-eluting stents by the end of the second quarter 2008. Some experts are even predicting a return to growth in angioplasty of 2-3 percent annually.
ACC set the stage for several diagnostic imaging debuts and enhancements, including Siemens’ Artis zee cath lab C-Arm, GE Healthcare’s new launch, the Vivid S5 ultrasound for the entry level market, and Philips’ Live 3D TEE, which made front page news, appearing on two March front covers of JACC.
Prevention of hypertension was another prevalent theme with results from HYVET, ONTARGET, ACCOMPLISH and ASTEROID that addressed reduction in risk in hypertension and in hyperlipidemia.
